What Is The Apprenticeship Levy?

The Apprenticeship Levy is part of a wider plan of apprenticeship reform announced by the Government and will come into effect from April 2017. It will affect the way apprenticeship training is funded in England and is designed to increase the number of apprenticeships as a way of meeting current and future skill needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who has to pay the levy?
Any UK employer, in any sector with a payroll of more than £3 million per year will need to pay the levy.
How much will the levy be?
For eligible employers with a payroll of more than £3 million per year, the levy will be 0.5% of the payroll, paid through PAYE.
What can the funding be spent on?
Funding can be used for existing staff or new apprentices.
What help is there for smaller employers?
Government will pay 90% of apprenticeship training costs for employers with a payroll of less than £3 million.
When do I need to start paying the levy?
1st May 2017
How long do I have to spend my levy?
You have 18 months to spend any levy contributions.
Are there any incentives?
Yes. Employers are entitled to a £1000 incentive for recruiting an apprentice aged 16-18 or an apprentice aged 19+ who requires additional support.
What input is there from government?
If you have a payroll of over £3 million, the Government will top up your contribution with an extra 10%. If your payroll is under £3 million, the Government will pay 90% of apprenticeship training costs. If you have less than 50 employees, a payroll bill of under £3 million and employ 16-18 apprentices, the Government will pay 100% of apprenticeship training costs.
